In today's post we will refer to the problem of used tyres.

Despite being an inert material, the vast amounts of tyres that are dumped in an uncontrolled manner generate high environmental and landscape impacts (risk of fire, insect infestation, etc.).

Various legal regulations are established for regulating the management of used tyres, some of them specifically created for this type of waste.

In the attached videos we can see a brief example of what can represent the dumping of used tyres, as well as some options for the valorisation of the components that are available in the tyres properly treated.

options of treatment of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) were
discussed in previous posts (see October 2011). Today we return to this subject
for to take a look again on them, showing videos that included two
complementary processes in the management of the WEEE's.

The first
one describes the process of extraction of components for PC's to be sent to
Materials Recycling Facilities, or for resale and reuse in the case to be in
good condition and be usable.
On this occasion, and already approaching the expected holidays, rather than show you a video with some waste treatment technology I attached a spectacular video for his images, which may also bring you elements of reflexion on the effects of human activity over the environment.

I hope you enjoy it.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8045489550226019234.post-25784285321685094412012-06-27T04:56:00.000-07:002012-06-27T04:56:03.315-07:00Waste to Energy: Plasma Gasification and Pyrolysis<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";">(English version below)

Two
examples of use of waste for obtaining electrical energy in the two attached
commercials in this new post.

The
first explains the operation of gasification by plasma. This type of treatment
allows obtaining electricity through the burning of the gas generated from
solid fuel (synthesis gas, mainly composed of carbon monoxide and hydrogen)
during the action of an electric arc that transforms inert gas into plasma.

If
residues are added in the fuel supply, in addition to the generation of
synthesis gas we obtain a non gasified fraction that becomes a solid slag
vitrified with toxicity practically null, usable as a material for
construction.

The
second video shows a process obtaining combustible gases coming from waste
using pyrolysis, consisting of heating the residue in the absence of oxygen and
distilling pyrogas (mixture of products such as methane, hydrogen, ethane,
butane, etc.) that once compressed and stored can be sent to power engines for
to obtain electricity. The non-volatile material (ash) is usually sent to a
landfill.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8045489550226019234.post-79404126705510488202012-05-31T00:59:00.000-07:002012-05-31T00:59:24.601-07:00Water Management(English version below)

This post
shows the two faces of the water management: on the one hand the purification
of water for human consumption and, on the other hand, the treatment of
residual water once consumed by the citizens.

I've found
very interesting to attach these two videos for two main reasons.

reason is the complementarity of them: they show together a comprehensive
overview of water management, since water capture in nature and its treatment
till it can be consumed by the man with sufficient guarantees of safety, until
the return of the water back to the environment once treated to avoid an
excessive impact.

The second
reason is the quality of the videos in terms of their capacity for to show in a
simple and effective way the different steps that forms the process as a whole.
With some very illustrative 3D animations, they makes a review of each phase of
treatment that allows to make a fairly clear idea of the complexity of the
process, without resorting to technicalities that hamper your understanding.

(English version below)

¿O no?

AMAZING WASTES

Waste management encompasses a great variety of products, from all the productive sectors and human activities. We generally associate the word "residue" with industrial remnants or domestic garbage, even with cattle manure, or vegetable debris from agricultural activities, resulting these wastes quite known to the point that we are not surprised by its existence.

Despite this, and even when I've been working in the waste management sector for more than two decades, I'm still discovering residual flows that surprise me, not by the possibility of its existence, (as I said above can come from any activity), but by the difficulty in appreciating the great problem that may generate simply because I don't know or I'm not related to the activity that generates.

An example is this that we show in the video that accompanies this post. It's about the waste generated by shotgun cartridges once fired, that at certain points may be accumulated in large amounts and that, from the perspective of a person not fond shooting and hunting, can be surprising.

As you can see in the video, a large amount of shotgun cartridges located in specific points can be managed easily, but, what could be done with the immense amount of cartridges that are scattered by the different hunting fields?

Personally I don't like hunting, but I am not particularly against. In any case I think that the use of such disproportionate potential force (weapons) against an unsuspecting animal is not "fair play", but here comes in the conscience of every person, and in this matter I don't want to enter.

What I think remarkable, what I find actually worrying, is a subject that has much to do with the respect for the environment: the extraordinary amount of waste that is released into the field, both the own projectile when it does not reach the piece, as the abandoned shotgun cartridges.

I think that in this activity it's needed greater cooperation by the hunters, being they responsible not only for the conservation and maintenance of the species that are hunted, (through associations of hunters and hunting grounds as they are already doing so far) but understanding that their activity has a number of impacts on natural resources and that well it worthwhile that they assume their responsibility on waste generated, carrying out its collection and managing them properly.

And after all, they are already doing in other areas, as they do with the rubbish in their home. Or not?

About the solution posed in the video for the management of this waste, I think it gives us a good metaphor for the meaning of real recycling: "infinite" use.
I hope you’ll find it interesting.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8045489550226019234.post-33834736189471462432012-03-31T12:04:00.000-07:002012-03-31T12:04:16.239-07:00Solvent Recovery(English version below)

The use of solvents in industry is widespread, especially for the cleaning of parts, containers, reactors, etc., in intermediate or final processes.

The remains of dirt (mostly grease) makes that the quality of the solvent is diminishing progressively, to the point that the solvent do not properly performs its objective, and it’s not able to obtain the desired cleaning.

At that point the solvent should be replaced by another with greater quality, discarding the dirty solvent, which must be managed correctly.

This management usually consists in contracting to an external waste management company for the collection and treatment of the solvent, transferring the responsibility to the waste management company.

The problem is that, with the responsibility, it’s also conferred the ownership of the dirty solvent, which has a certain value, and at the same time it is necessary to acquire an auxiliary product (new solvent) to continue with the process.

The recovery of used solvent is an effective way of improving the environmental impact of the activity that generates, as well as savings in the acquisition of new solvent, which just need to be purchased to go complementing the quantities needed to ensure a certain quality required by the process and/or to compensate for those losses of solvent by evaporation during its use or the solvent that cannot be recovered by distillation and became a final residue with the remains of dirt (bottom of distillation).

The two attached videos show, on the one hand, the reasons that justify the use of a solvent recycler in a company, and on the other hand, how a solvent recycler of small capacity (30 litres) works.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8045489550226019234.post-72393835885703459532012-02-29T10:46:00.000-08:002012-02-29T10:46:47.394-08:00Gestión de Residuos Sanitarios (Medical Waste Management)(English version at the end of the post)

The videos attached in this post shows aspects related to the management of health care wastes.

The first one describes the management inside the medical centres of the waste through an animated character that indicates how to proceed with waste, focusing on the safety and in the segregation of the different types of waste.

This example of segregation is valid as such, corresponding to each country according to its own regulations the assignment of colours to each fraction, number and type of fractions to separate, etc.

The second one explains quite clearly, and with the help of diagrams, how a treatment equipment works for one of the segregated fractions. In particular, this treatment is based on microwave sterilization.

Other most common systems are the treatments with steam in autoclaves. After shredding the waste, it is sterilized by means of saturation with steam at high temperature and pressure.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8045489550226019234.post-53436734861244441912012-01-22T11:36:00.000-08:002012-01-22T11:48:39.397-08:00Pesticide Packaging(English version below video pictures)

I attached a couple of videos related to the used containers which have contained pesticides.

The first shows 10 tips for a proper handling of packaging once their content has been spent, in order to a safe management, prior to their collection and further transport to a processing plant.

The second video shows the proposal of a new design of packaging for pesticides that facilitates the cleaning for intermediate storage prior to the collection, as well as its recyclability and saving of raw material during manufacture.

The main interest (from my point of view) of this video lies in the observation that a small change in the design of a container can encourage the use of the product contained, the management of the waste that is generated during their use (both remnants of product and the same container), and at the same time reducing the use of raw material (plastic), energy and CO2 emissions during manufacture of the packaging.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8045489550226019234.post-48223382693685079742011-12-19T08:42:00.000-08:002011-12-19T08:42:48.135-08:00Recycling Gypsum Plasterboards
(English version after the videos)

We all know that glass bottles, aluminum cans of drink, old newspapers, etc., if separated properly, have a high degree of recovery through its reintroduction as a feedstock in the production cycle, allowing to save costs in raw materials and energy for the production of new product, and also to avoid landfilling.

<span lang="EN" style="color: black; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: ES;">As well as these materials (from domestic use), many products used in the industry can be reused through recycling. Management systems that allow a greater degree of recovery and recycling rates can be established through the awareness of manufacturers and users.

<span lang="EN" style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: ES;">In previous posts we have seen some treatment processes oriented to waste recycling.

<span lang="EN" style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: ES;"><span lang="EN" style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: ES;">In today's post we will talk about something more controversial: landfills. This is obviously an option that should be considered as a last solution, but not for this should be stigmatized.

<span lang="EN" style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: ES;"><span lang="EN" style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: ES;">It is an option that, well managed, and used as a last alternative for those wastes that can not be treated in another way, represents the natural end of the production cycle of all the things that surrounds us.

<span lang="EN" style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: ES;">For the majority of the people, the image that comes to their mind when speaking of a landfill is a land full of trash, rodents and insects, with a large number of papers and bags rolling away by the wind, unpleasant smell, and puddles of black water going to the streams and wells around.

<span lang="EN" style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: ES;"><span lang="EN" style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: ES;">Sadly this is true in many cases, but it's true in poorly managed landfills, most of them illegal, and that must be reproved.

<span lang="EN" style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: ES;"><span lang="EN" style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: ES;">Despite this, today there are many sites which are managed in a fully professional manner, considering all the precautions and requirements defined by regulations, and with a work of very complex engineering ranging from the design of the shape of the landfill to the works of post-closure and surveillance for more than 15 years after its useful life, going through management of leachate (liquid generated by waste) and the collection and use of methane (gas produced in the landfill and that gives its characteristic odor) among other many works and industrial processes.

<span lang="EN" style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: ES;"><span lang="EN" style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: ES;">In the videos that I attached you can see, firstly, the external appearance of a macro-landfill and the works of downloading and compaction of waste, and as you can see they are some major works.

<span lang="EN" style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: ES;"><span lang="EN" style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: ES;">The second video shows how a landfill works, and how the leachate, gases, etc. are managed and controlled. So, this is a more informative video about the concept of a modern landfill.
